Griffonia seeds are the dried seeds of Griffonia simplicifolia, a shrub in the legume family. The seeds are oblong, about 1.5 cm long and 1 cm wide, with a black, wrinkled seed coat and a yellowish-green endosperm, slightly scented with beans. It is wild in West African countries such as Ghana, Ivory Coast and Togo, and is harvested from December to February every year. Ghana seed extract (5-hydroxytryptophan, 5-HTP) is an amino acid - like substance. 5-HTP is considered a dietary supplement in the United States, United Kingdom and Canada.
