Ergothioneine, EGT is a naturally occurring amino acid with antioxidant activity. Ergothioneine has good photothermal stability and is not easy to be oxidized and decomposed. It is a water-soluble cosmetic raw material and is easy to mix. Moreover, ergothioneine is non-toxic in epidermal cells, so the skin will not be irritated when used, and it has a very broad application prospect in the cosmetic industry. Ergothioneine is a good UV protectant that blocks UV damage to the skin and acts as a sunscreen. Ergothioneine can also scavenge high concentrations of free radicals in the human body. Studies have shown that when ergothioneine is used together with antioxidants, there is a good synergistic effect.

1) China    
In 2014, ergothioneine was formally included in the Catalogue of Used Cosmetic Ingredients by the State Drug Administration. With its excellent antioxidant properties, ergothioneine has gradually become a major ingredient in the skin care industry. Currently, ergothioneine is applying as a new food ingredient, which signifies its cross-industry application expansion in the domestic food and functional food sectors     
2) European Union
In July 2017, the EU approved L-ergothioneine as a new food ingredient, which can be applied in dietary supplements at 30 mg per day for the general population and 20 mg per day for children over 3 years old, and cannot be applied in pregnant women and breastfeeding women.In 2018, the EU expanded the scope of L-ergothioneine's use, which can be applied in general food products such as beverages and cereal bars, in addition to dietary supplements.

In August 2019, L-ergothioneine passed the GRAS certification of the US FDA and can be applied in general food products.     
4) Japan
Beginning in 2020, the Japanese market began to introduce functional indicated foods containing ergothioneine, focusing on improving memory function in the elderly.

Health Canada has approved ergothioneine as a medicinal/non-medicinal natural health product, and in non-medicinal cases, it is used as a preservative, antioxidant, and skin conditioner.
